Community has been a central tenet of Mill City Running since day one. But beyond creating a hub for runners and “not a runners” alike, we understand intimately the transformative power of running and teamwork and are committed to sharing that power wherever we can. So when the opportunity arose to become founding members and sponsors of a group of local runners dedicated to bringing the power of running to people experiencing homelessness back in 2014, we recognized the opportunity to use what we know best - running in a supportive environment - to make an impact in our local community.

Mile in My Shoes (MiMS), started by longtime employee Mishka Vertin and race team member Mike Jurasits, has since grown into a thriving nonprofit organization that operates running teams at shelters and re-entry centers throughout the Twin Cities. Teams pair shelter residents with local runners - many from our very own race team - who train together 2-3 times a week, leading not only to dramatic improvements in physical & mental health, but to unique friendships that transform every runner involved.

Mill City Running supports Mile in My Shoes by helping to ensure that all new members begin their running journey with new shoes and a full set of gear they can wear with pride. You can also find us flipping up our signature flapjacks at MiMS’ annual 5K race, the Downtown Run Around, or visit our MiMS Giving Tree each holiday season. Interested in joining us in supporting Mile in My Shoes runners? Stop by the shop and purchase an official MiMS running tee or tank - all proceeds are used to purchase gear for MiMS members. Or sign up to be a Run Mentor with one of their six teams.
