ALL CROSSED OUT // A GUIDE TO FINDING YOUR CROSS COUNTRY SPIKE
New to Cross Country? Looking to set a new personal best? From every day training shoes to racing spikes, we’ve got you covered at Mill City and Saint City Running. With our free, comprehensive fit process we’re confident we can find you the best XC spike for your needs.
If you’re just starting out, you may be wondering what is the best cross country spike for variable surfaces like grass, gravel, and the inevitable mud puddle. While they share some characteristics with track spikes, like being extremely lightweight and incorporating metal spikes for traction, the similarities tail off there. When looking for the best xc spikes, you’ll find that rather than possessing an extremely rigid plastic spike plate, cross country shoes opt for a more flexible plate with additional rubber coverage to adapt to the various surfaces and angles a runner will encounter while running nature’s racetrack. Additionally, some spikes will incorporate added foam to cushion each stride as cross country races are generally longer than what you might encounter during track season.
So you might be left wondering how do I choose a cross country spike? While they all share the core features listed above, we offer a spectrum of options from more relaxed, entry-level spikes to hardcore track/XC hybrids so you can find the best cross country spike for you.

Cross Country Spikes FAQ’s
Sizing - How should cross country spikes fit? How to size cross country spikes is often a mystery to the new runner. Our general rule of thumb for spikes is to have them be comfortably snug. Runners with too much room in the toe will lose energy sliding around in the shoe, runners with too little room will likely lose a toenail! A little bit (we’re talking centimeters) of distance between the end of the toe and the end of the shoe is perfect.
Unisex Sizes - What size am I in a unisex spike? Depending on what you typically wear its easy to convert to a unisex shoe. For a men’s spike the unisex size matches the same so no change is needed. For a women’s spike the general conversion is to subtract 1.5 sizes from your typical women’s size. Example: Women’s 9.5 = Unisex 8 / Men’s 8 = Unisex 8.
Spike Length - What length metal spike should I use? Typically a cross country spike will come with 3/8” spikes which offers versatility for a variety of races and courses. If a course doesn’t have great footing due to weather or the terrain, 1/2” spikes can be substituted. Also, sometimes just the front two pins can be replaced with longer spikes. There is no right or wrong answer and it depends on the individual and the course. If you are using your cross country spikes for some longer distance races on the track we recommend 1/4” spikes as they are required by most tracks.
